Full thoughts on Oumasai? You mentioned them being terrible exes in your heart in one of your reblog post tags.

Generally, my brain has a few working settings for them: Fluffy, Angsty (but still sorta sweet), Angsty (as in the best metaphor for this is two airplanes crashing into eachother), "They exist but like the plot is more important than them and they have other stuff to deal with" and "Shuichi gets stuck in terrible situations with only Kokichi and they somehow make it work even though they've gotten extremely close to all the previous options in this list except the fluffy one and have encountered death multiple times". Btw, an AO3 author has fics where they have this mutual rivalry where they both hate eachother in their Oumota fics and its so funny that it deserves to be a runner-up on this list even though I don't have it in my own AUs. Oh, and Phantom Thief AUs are fun as well, though I'm not sure *how* canon they are cause in the game Shuichi constantly goes between liking his work and respecting his uncle, and hating his job and the pain it causes him.

They're like the one pairing I can't quite pin down as to what I'd like it to be. In my head, they're happy together, but also they hate eachother and are really only in the same spaces cause of their mutual friends, but they're also constantly up to shenangians with eachother and enjoy the other's company. It's a pairing that's really great to see in a positive portrayal when done properly, but is also really great to see in a negative portrayal when done properly. Maybe Shuichi feels sympathy for Kokichi after he solves "the puzzle", maybe he just moves onto the next one and doesn't even give him another look. Maybe Kokichi hates him after seeing him give sympathy to a literal assassin, just because his friend said so, but not a liar, even though as a detective, he should have seen firsthand how much damage murderers cause.

Maybe this is too far into fandom territory, and based on canon, and Shuichi doesn't really like investigating stuff all that much if his life doesn't depend on it, and they're getting nowhere because he's just gonna take stuff at facial value while Kokichi facepalms on the inside.

I also made an AU that's kinda a study on their opposing character traits and ideologies but I'll send that in a separate ask since its mostly off-topic.

Anyway, I really wanna know your full thoughts on this subject cause there's so much room for exploration of both of their characters through this dynamic, whether they like eachother or not.

I definitely need to tag this so it can be filtered, but it's also me talking about how I do not like a lot of this ship, and how I view them as an inherently toxic duo, so uh, check under the cut at your own peril

Oh boy, anyone who knows my blog knows I do not care for this ship, I am vocal about this but I also try to be polite. If it weren't for the fact I'm a sucker for Kokichi being cute it would basically never be on my blog. I do not think they work well in a relationship and I feel most of the time their personalities get stripped down to force it to work. I cannot stand fluff of the two outside of going "cute picture of kokichi smiling go brrr and also shuichi is there i guess"

However, I find the idea of them being a sort of "wrong person right time" to be interesting if done well. They're a trauma bond waiting to happen honestly. I feel like neither of them really see the other as like, a real person? More on Shuichi's end then Kokichi but definitely still somewhat on Kokichi's.

Shuichi sees Kokichi as a mystery, a nuisance, a confusion, kokichi's well being is second to the mystery, kokichi is someone to be stopped or placated, not a person, but like he says in canon, "the embodiment of a lie." Even when he gets closer to Kokichi in free time events or love across the universe, there's this exasperation. He's drawn to the intrigue, he's not drawn to Kokichi as a person. Kokichi is a natural phenomenon, like a tornado, inevitable, destructive, and intriguing, but not a person.

Meanwhile Kokichi only really takes an interest in Shuichi for all the things Shuichi doesn't want to be. The logical detective, the sherlock to his moriarty, someone he can wind up like a little toy robot and then watch go. He enjoys Shuichi's company, but he's not really coming down to meet Shuichi on equal ground y'know? He's still placing himself above Shuichi as the one tugging strings and fixing things to his liking. Kokichi wants the chase, but the chase doesn't really require actually opening up to Shuichi or treating him well.

This is absolutely not a mindset or dynamic for a functional relationship

So I find anything that doesn't to some degree acknowledge that fact to be bland and often ooc. These two cannot have a standard fluffy dynamic to me from where they are in canon, and attempts to do so that haven't earned it often draw an eye roll from me.

However, the dynamic as bitter exes? Absolutely perfect, the crash and burn from this must be spectacular. Shuichi goes a step too far in figuring out the mystery, Kokichi ignores Shuichi's opinions one too many times, Shuichi snitches on Kokichi to someone, Kokichi gets frustrated when Shuichi tries to step out of the bounds of the game in his mind...

Aka It's fucking imploding, and you just KNOW they'd be absolutely catty bitter exes, they're cyberstalking the other, Kokichi because he thinks its funny and he's bad at letting go, and Shuichi because he's also bad at letting go but he's pretending its to keep an eye on Kokichi and make sure he's not doing something messed up. Shuichi refusing to ever use the connections Kokichi brought him in his detective work even if it makes things more perilous or risky out of pride but does make sure Kokichi knows he's not using them.

Just, absolute disaster of a breakup, I am sitting with popcorn watching the fireworks, there's so many places you could take that and they're all interesting. I find embracing this toxicity and playing into them as a bad match who only tries to drag the other down, even unintentionally, who happened to meet at the right time to get attached to be very interesting.

Maybe they're forced to work together for a case because an innocent life is at stake and Shuichi has to swallow his pride. Maybe they keep rebounding off each other unable to resist the allure of easy drunk hatesnogging. Maybe Kokichi genuinely gets hurt and the only person around he knows well enough to be able to get some help with is Shuichi. Maybe Kokichi crashes Shuichi's wedding ten years later. Maybe Kokichi gets caught and imprisoned and Shuichi is the only detective willing to talk to him as Kokichi taunts him for being so predictable and being a lapdog who found a new owner. Maybe Shuichi starts dating again and Kokichi tries to homewreck by suddenly springing back into his life. Maybe they have healthy communication about their issu- HA maybe not that one. (this is a joke that could also be interesting)

Stories where they both have an ideology they want to impose on the other, Kokichi cannot be made to be good in the way Shuichi perceives as good without destroying everything that is Kokichi but also Shuichi cannot be made to be good in the way Kokichi perceives as good without destroying everything that Shuichi is. However neither would ever let themselves back down and just accept their differences, because that too would be a loss.

Unstoppable force meets Immovable object until they inevitably split apart messily with claw marks dug into the other. Consumption hiding as understanding on both sides. They bring out the worst in each other, Kokichi brings out Shuichi's catty prideful side while Shuichi brings out Kokichi's more controlling and manipulative side.

There is no respect, no true consideration of another persons needs and wants, only a game with one potential winner. At least, that's my own reading of the two and a potential relationship. So yeah, I basically see them as terrible exes. Neither can be what the other needs, and neither honestly really even wants to be what the other needs in the first place. No teamwork, only competition.

Is there a piece of clothing you think [character] is particularly fond of/that you imagine them wearing a lot or like to draw them in?

I love love looovvee Kaito's jacket. It's my favorite part of his design. One minor change I make when I sketch or doodle him is that instead of a blazer I make it a purple astronaut jacket. I also head-cannon he got his ears pierced as a baby and where's star/religious earrings depending on the occasion.

Write a recommendation for someone's fic you enjoyed?

I will never shut up about Amalgamate by DoctorHaifish on ao3. Not only is it a fix-it fic where my favorites get to survive but it's wonderfully written and builds on each character and their development so well!

I also have to recommend Galaxy Masquerade by whattheskyknows on Ao3 if you want an Oumota Phantom Thief au. I loved it!\

What's your favorite thing about [fandom] (the people in it, not the media you're all enjoying together)?

With the reputation the Danganronpa fandom has I'm surprised (not really because a fandoms "reputation is never real) that's it's actually a pretty chill place. I love just how much passion people have for this franchise. I'm watching the Goodbye Despair Musical right now and I'm in awe how much it's oozing with passion. Everyone in this fandom has so much love and passion for this series despite it's flaws and it being "outdated".

Tsumugi would be proud lol.

Oumota Week Day One:

Phantom Thief / Stuck in a Small Place 

HEY, IM SO SORRY IM LATE ON OUMOTA WEEK. I WAS SUPER BUSY AND I’M SLOWLY CATCHING UP, SO I MIGHT BE A DAY OFF EACH DAY. IM SORRY. But I also was busy writing my first fic, just for this piece, so I hope you like it? ;; 

Until We Meet Again 

Word Count: 1987

A slam from the door echoed across an empty apartment building, Momota sighed as he began to undo his tie and threw it across the room, not caring where the piece of fabric ends up. He can always pick it later, when he’s in a better state of mind. 

It was a long day at work for Momota; the endless lecture his boss has given him from failing to capture The Phantom Thief, yet again, to the simple little things of just having his coffee be a colder than he’d like to, everything seemed to tick him off. He swears he’s on the verge of blowing up.

It was getting stressful for him day by day The Phantom Thief wasn’t caught, and every time he was face to face with this notorious criminal, Momota always somehow let him slip away from his grasp. 

The Phantom Thief, the leader of the city’s known gang, D.I.C.E; infamous for thievery and causing a ruckus to citizens and the officers with petty pranks. Property damage, mainly, Momota remembers coming into work and seeing little colorful faces spray painted on the front doors of the station. Alongside the gang’s logos and the provoking message the phantom thief always leaves, “Until we meet, my beloved~”. What does that even mean? Who is it even directed to? 

“Ugh, fuck me.” Momota groans from the memory, the stress is just too damn much. He collapses on his couch with a heavy sigh. The more he is involved and invested in this case, the more he thinks the messages are specifically for him. 

He closes his eyes, taking a deep breath in and out and releases some of the tension in his muscles he didn’t know he had. Momota groaned from the pain that was let go, his breathing started to slow down naturally as he felt himself drifting into sleep slowly. The night breeze was cool on his skin, as the wind blew through long curtains and from his balcony into the apartment, it felt nice. Finally, finally, he can rest-

“Wait a second,” Momota suddenly lifted his head wide eyes, immediately on alert. “..I...never left the door open, I always keep it locked. What the hell?” He was on his feet in an instant, becoming more aware of his surroundings. Nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary...except for the petals all over the floor. Momota kneeled to pick one of the withered little floral leaves. Getting a closer look; the petal was crimson and crumpled a bit, “A rose petal…?” muttered Momota, noticing the petal to be shriveled, which must have meant that they’ve been here for awhile. After inspecting it for a second more, he found that there was more petals that were in such a noticeable pattern, leading to his bedroom, for it to be such a convenience. Okay, so far Momota has concluded that; one, someone broke into his apartment building. And two, that someone purposely spread rose petals all over his apartment leading to his bedroom. Sure, Momota should be more alerted or even scared from these conclusions, since there could be potential robber or even a murderer in his own home.

But for some reason, Momota couldn’t help but feel relaxed a bit after having a strong sense of knowing who this certain someone is. 

Now, there’s two ways he can go about this, assuming the home invader is still here; 

He can run into his bedroom and catch the culprit red handed and finally solve all the solutions to his stress, or he can play along. 

Momota stands up and slowly start to make his way to his bedroom, following the petals. For a moment, his conscience is screaming for him to run in and arrest this culprit once and for all, before the opportunity misses him. But his gut, told him to play along. 

“Ah, why hello there, Officer Momota!” 

And there he was, The Phantom Thief, himself. Laying right on top of Momota’s bed; who quickly changed his position the moment he noticed Momota entering, to move his slender body to lay on his side while his left arm supports him, as he lays his hand on his cheek. 

“It took you quite awhile to get home, do you know how rude it is to keep such an important figure waiting?” his voice was soft and his tone sounded like he was seducing the officer in question. Which seemed fitting to his pose and the rose petals all over the bed, it was exactly like in the romance movies. But Momota brushed that thought right away, he scoffed, “Don’t you know how illegal it is to break into people’s apartment and trash the place?” 

“How insulting! If anything, I made an improvement on the trash it already was before!”  The Phantom Thief immediately sit up and crossed his legs, giving a pout. 

Momota barked out a laugh and leans on the door frame, “You know you’ve been a real pain in the ass for me lately, Phantom Thief.” 

The Phantom Thief smiles and taps his finger on the side of his cheek. “Hmm? Have I? I thought you enjoy our games together, Momota-chan?” 

Momota blinks and suddenly feels hot on his face, “M-Momota-chan?!” This was new. Sure, The Phantom Thief calls him nicknames from time to time in their confrontations but “chan” was something that just caught him off guard. 

“Nishishi, I totally got you there! Look at how red you are for me, don’t tell me Mr. Officer has developed a crush on little ol’ me?” The Phantom Thief teased, it was lucky Momota was too flabbergasted to noticed the blush that appeared on his own face.

It took a few moments for Momota to regain some composure and respond, but even then he couldn’t help but stutter, “A-As if, anyways, it looks like you’ve just trapped yourself. Coming into my apartment and really, I’m blocking the only exit to your escape.” 

“It seems you’ve finally got me,” The Phantom Thief stood up on the bed, causing some of the rose petals to fall off the bed, “whatever shall I do?” A surprise rose was shown as he revealed his right hand and lifted the flower to his face. A smirk was directed at Momota, challenging him. 

Momota wasn’t liking this one bit, he lifted his chest up as he spread more of his body to cover the door frame, there was no way he was letting The Phantom Thief escape him this time. Not when he was right there, absolutely cornered. And there was no possible way for him to sneak out of his bedroom’s window, they were just too high up, the only exit was Momota’s front door. 

 “Hm?” The Phantom Thief lowered his rose and gave a curious look, “it looks like Mr. Officer isn’t going to let me go that easy, huh?” He jumped from the bed, landing gently, and slowly walking towards Momota. Momota looking and studying the thief’s every movement, being very aware, in case he were to try and pull something to sneak around him. But as the little thief came in front of him, he looked up and rose both of his hands together to him as he continued to hold the rose, “then arrest me.” 

Shit. 

Momota thought, he doesn’t have his handcuffed equipped to his belt, and his only pair was around his apartment somewhere. Maybe if he used his tie? Nope, he threw that thing also in his messy apartment. 

“Looks like you can’t, Mr.Officer! You have no handcuffs or anything to arrest me with!” the thief giggled as he started to lower his hands. And for some reason, Momota’s instinct kicked into action as he found himself grabbing onto both of The Phantom Thief’s hands. Letting go of the rose, the smaller gasped as the unexpected contact.

“I’m. Not. Letting. You. Go.” Momota growled, staring intensely at the criminal, he was dead set on capturing the little rat once and for all. A blush went deeper on the thief’s face at how intense the situation is, it was heart pounding. But The Phantom Thief wasn’t going to allow himself to be caught like this, he smiled as he tried to keep his composure, “then I guess this is the part we kiss?” 

“EXCUSE ME?” Momota choked but still remaining a strong grip on the thief’s hands, very determined to not let go. 

“Weeeeelll, when you say it like that, usually in the movies, this is the part where people are supposed to kiss! Silly, Momota-chan, don’t you know anything?” 

“I- What?! What are you even saying!?” 

Momota’s hands seemed to have lightened, this is good he’s getting embarrassed. All he has to do is push it a little more… 

“I mean, I was expecting our first kiss to be more romantic. But I guess it doesn’t get more romantic as this? Rose petals all over your apartment, I’m all over your bed, right where you want me-” 

“SHUT UP!”  Momota quickly lets go of his hands to bring it to his face, The Phantom Thief doesn’t miss this opportunity and quickly squeezes beside the officer. Momota instantly realizes his mistake and turns around to see The Phantom Thief not run towards the front door, but to the doors to his balcony. He takes action and runs after him, seeing him slip outside past the blowing curtains. But as soon as Momota takes a step outside, he sees The Phantom Thief balancing on the railings of his balcony, Momota stops at a sudden fear of the boy accidentally falling off. 

The thief smiles as he takes off his hat, giving a bow to the officer, “it was fun as always, Momota-chan!” he looks up at the officer’s shocked expression. 

“But it seems I win this game,” The Phantom Thief stands straight as his hands dig into hands into his hat. He leaps backwards from the balcony, Momota immediately running to try and save him from falling but was met with rose petals in face. As soon as Momota got a clear vision, he sees petals everywhere around him and The Phantom Thief; who has seemed to carelessly falling in mid air, rose petals surrounding him as he put on his hat and smiled at the officer, “until we meet again, my beloved~” 

The scene to it all seemed so unreal, like something you’d definitely see in a movie. And Momota would be more allured to the sight before him, if he wasn’t too worried about the boy falling to his death. He went to grab the railing and reach out for the thief, but saw The Phantom Thief gently land on a rooftop. The building wasn’t very far from Momota’s balcony and not too high for the thief to stumble. How could he forget such a building was even there, I guess Momota was more worried about the thief’s safety at the moment. But Momota should have known the criminal better than to assume he didn’t have an escape plan outside his balcony, it must have been how he entered his apartment in the first place. 

The Phantom Thief looked up at him and gave him a last smile and laugh, as he turned around to run off into the night. 

Momota let out a long breath that he didn’t even knew he was holding, and his muscles relaxed once again. Fuck. He thought, he let The Phantom Thief escape from his grasp yet again. But Momota couldn’t seem to be stressed at the time but to have some sort of excitement build within him, and the happiness that their games will continue. 

He’ll let himself stress about it another time, but for right now, everything felt right. Momota sighed but smiled, 

“I guess we will meet again…”

So I’d like to ask your opinion on Kokichi Oma, his character, his part in V3’s story, thoughts on the three ship that involve him (Shuichi, Keebo and Himiko) and would he have been a better antagonist then Tsumugi.

Damn, this is a wide question... I'll do my best to answer it precisely, although this could be long... Kokichi is a complex character, after all.

First, about his character... He's the typical "UwU-looking boy is actually a psychopath... but actually maybe not completely" type of character. Personally, I thought that his compulsive lies made him an interesting character, as he spiced up the trials. He made everything a bit more confused, and while this may have caused headaches at times, I believe it also made the plot more interesting (best examples: Chapters Four & Five). On the other hand, he's physically adorable, and he's a true jester (which may have been his most irritating trait, actually, haha). Overall, he was clearly designed to be a character you love to hate, just like Nagito, and while I don't believe he's as good as Nagito, he's still a pretty good character.

Then, about his role in V3... I have to say I found him to be a little too obvious on the one hand, but far less obvious on another. I knew from the end of Chapter Four that he wasn't really the Mastermind as he claimed, but I wouldn't have thought he would be putting on an act to stop the Killing Game. I believed he would turn out to be a Togami-like character, who enjoyed the thrill of the game without being the Mastermind. Of course, while it was tragic, the impact he had on Chapter Four was masterful. What he did to Gonta was absolutely horrible, and yet, it was so in-character for him. What happened in Chapter Five was the best proof that his character is really complex, as he literally outsmarted Monokuma and the Mastermind. Had it not been for Shuichi (and Kaito), they definitely would have stumped Monokuma. The fact that he went as far as to forfeit his own life to end the Killing Game shows just how much he hated it. And his final line about not having been boring sums up his character perfectly.

Now, about his ships...

Starting with Saiouma... I like this ship, but for all the reasons you won't hear anywhere else. Usually, people ship Kokichi and Shuichi as the "UwU gay boy" and "emo and depressed boy" dynamic, which is a shame. As I said before, there's much more to his character than that. The dynamic that works between them is Opposites Attract (or even Enemies to Lovers, somewhat). If shipped together, they're meant to be rival lovers, which is why the idea of a Phantom Thief AU works well.

Kiiboma... is a fine ship, although it lacks a third member: Miu. With only Keebo and Kokichi, I think it lacks somebody who won't hesitate to argue fiercely with Kokichi, even if they fail miserably. Keebo has this tendency to back down a little bit too easily (before Chapter Five) when opposed, which reduces the appeal for me. Still, it's not a bad ship.

Oumeno is a good ship... in an AU. In my opinion, it doesn't work well in the canon timeline, as they just don't get enough interactions (save for that moment Exisal Kokichi - i.e. Kaito - teases about liking her). However, in an AU where the stakes aren't as high (like an HPA AU) and where they can get more time together, why not! I think it's pretty cute!

I'd like to mention Oumota, too, which works well, too, as well as Irouma and Ougoku which can also work well, depending on the universe.

Now, last but not least, I don't believe it would have been wise for Kokichi to be the actual antagonist. I do believe that Tsumugi wasn't that great of a final villain, but I don't think it was Kokichi's role to be the final antagonist. He worked much better as a decoy, I believe.

Listen, okay. I'm in my Oumota feels and I need y'all to listen. So we take this angel and demon au, right? Except we flip it and make Kokichi the angel and Kaito the demon. Now, Kokichi's never been to earth before; this is first time on earth. And then he meets Kaito, who's been to earth many times tempting people into mild bad deeds. And Kokichi is amazed by him because he's never seen a demon outside of the ugly pictures he was shown in training to go to earth, but obviously he's not going to show that if he can. So he just watches Kaito for a while, when eventually Kaito notices him – and mistakes him as a human! And Kokichi loves that because it's a great cover story to spend more time with this demon (because obviously he wouldn't like Kokichi if he found out he was an angel) and that's the start of their meetings. Now here's where I really get in my feels, so listen close, Oumota shippers. Kaito needs to do something big to pass this demon examination of how he's been doing on earth, and if he fails he can't go to earth anymore. Kaito opens up to Kokichi about this, and Kokichi panics because if that happens, he won't ever be able to see Kaito again! (And obviously by this point he's become closer to Kaito than he ever expected to.) So he tries to help Kaito, pulling off some big heist like a phantom thief (he's always found those sorts of things interesting in humanity), but it fails terribly and Kokichi's meetings with Kaito are discovered, causing him to Fall. So Kaito's upset, starting to panic himself, when who should drop in on him but Kokichi, wings burning up! So they go through this whole thing of "AHHH YOUR WINGS ARE ON FIRE" and "WAIT YOU LIED ABOUT BEING HUMAN DIDN'T YOU" and it's a whole mess where both of them are crying and eventually they both leave. Now Kokichi's struggling as a newly fallen angel, and Kaito's like, "wait, I was an ass, of course he couldn't just be open about being an angel," so while he's still upset over Kokichi lying he goes to look for him. There's probably more angst, like Kokichi getting used as bait so other angels can try and hurt Kaito, but... But this is where you can decide the ending. Do you prefer pure angst, where Kokichi dies saving Kaito and Kaito realizes he can bring in Kokichi's body for his examination (because what else could mean passing a demon exam if not the corpse of an angel you made Fall?) and guarantee himself the ability to continue going to earth forever? Or do you prefer a happy ending, where they both live and realize that Kokichi's newly Fallen status can help out Kaito, and they live happily ever after in hell? Listen, Oumota-ers. I'm in my feels.

Oumota Week 2019 - Day 1: Phantom Thief / Stuck in a Small Space

Decided to pay homage to a less conventional phantom thief style today, with a crossover for Lupin the III, with Kaito as Jigen & Kokichi as Lupin in one of their classic getaways! This gentleman thief with all his gadgetry, carefree attitude and dramatic chases seemed right up Kokichi’s alley, and Kaito’s an excellent right hand man! It was a ton of fun blending the styles together, I might even draw some more characters in this crossover later for fun :D

Oumota phantom thief au where Kokichi is a phantom thief and one day Kaito notices his jacket is missing. He gets a call from a friend one evening to check the news and when he turns it on he sees that a certain elusive phantom thief has swapped out their cape for his favourite starry jacket.

Both Kokichi and Kaito end up encountering each other more and more because a certain Mister Spaceman has caught Kokichi's attention.

(Additional idea is Kaito ends up managing to steal Kokichi's beloved scarf during a different encounter and it is officially game on from then on.)
